Thomson Reuters addresses societal needs not only by sharing core skills through the Thomson Reuters Foundation’s programs but through volunteering, support of employee giving and philanthropy. We recognize that the giving of basic cash grants (philanthropy) is only one way we can support our local communities. In our Community Support Policy, we outline how the giving of time and skills through volunteering, and the support of staff contributions by offering matched giving and recognition programs, are powerful tools in both engaging employees with our corporate values and in building relationships with identified strategic causes and community partners.
Our philanthropic efforts are directed towards supporting non-profit organizations with donations to support organizations that are local to our businesses. Thomson Reuters does not respond to unsolicited requests for funding; however, we do provide financial support to causes nominated by staff through established programs.
Community Champion Awards Program
Established in 2001, the Community Champion program is open to all employees and recognizes significant community projects. A panel of Thomson Reuters judges evaluate the applications. In 2009, more than 250 employees submitted applications and a total of $150,000 was awarded in grants to 50 non profit organisations. Learn more
Volunteering
Our staff have a variety of personal and professional skills that they share with the communities in which our businesses are located, helping to address real needs while learning about social issues and developing business skills such as communication and facilitation as a result of their engagements.
Working in partnership with community organizations and charities, our people provide valuable support through sharing time, expertise and resources while increasing their own skills and awareness of social issues. In support, we have a Community Volunteering Policy enabling all Thomson Reuters staff globally to take a minimum of one business day per year to engage in a volunteering effort. Local business units may offer additional time off above this one day minimum. Learn more
Matching Gifts
To support our employees’ personal giving, a global, uniform matching gift program was launched to all employees in May 2009. Employees are able to apply for a matched grant to recognized and qualifying charities. The program guidelines are in line with our overall Community Support Policy.
Thomson Reuters Foundation
Established in 1982, the Thomson Reuters Foundation is registered as a charity in the US and UK. The Foundation leverages the skills and expertise across Thomson Reuters businesses to increase trust and access to the rule of law, to save lives through the provision of trusted information and to improve the standards of journalism. Its major new portal, trust.org, integrating its programs and the Foundation’s community of partners, will be launched in April.
