Environment_300x200Reducing our impact on the environment through sustainable business practices and innovative use of technology is a key priority at Thomson Reuters. We continually strive to make positive steps toward a low-carbon future that combines environmental responsibility with efficient business performance.

We support these goals through a variety of corporate initiatives and individual actions, including the following:

Implementing a comprehensive policy

In February 2011, our Executives approved an Environment, Health & Safety policy for our  global business. This policy will now be implemented through a series of phased environmental and Health & Safety initiatives across the business. We have shaped these programs by working throughout 2009 and 2010 with external experts to calculate baseline environmental impact data, conduct benchmarking reviews and shape our future strategy.

We will refine our Environmental strategy in partnership with Forum for the Future, an independent, non-profit organization focused on sustainability. Our environmental and health & safety initiatives will be implemented in the business by working in partnership with our Facilities Managers, HR partners and other key partners. In addition, we will use our global Project Green Council, launched in 2009 with Executive sponsorship, to refine our sustainability agenda within the business.

Action Across the Business

Reducing our environmental impact encompasses a wide range of initiatives that involve our people, our data centers and our facilities around the world. Here are just a few examples:

“Greening” the Data Center

Technology is at the core of our business. That's why Thomson Reuters is actively engaged with leading industry and government organizations developing best practices and standards for reducing data center energy use.

Using Paper Responsibly

Our printing facility in Eagan, Minnesota, is one of the largest in the U.S., producing more than 48 million books in 2009. The operations have been publicly recognised for the sustainable business practices in place.

Promoting Individual Initiative

In Thomson Reuters offices around the world, employees help promote environmental awareness and sustainable practices that align with their local circumstances. We facilitate this through a network of more than 75 Green Teams. These teams of staff volunteers address issues of relevance and interest to their location, providing opportunities to learn and take personal action. Green Teams share best practices via a dedicated intranet site equipped with checklists, toolkits, blog discussions, and staff photos.

Thomson Reuters continues to invest in TelePresence technologies, substantially reducing the need for overseas travel, while promoting a healthy work/life balance for employees.
