“Greening” the Data Center

Data centers are an essential part of our mission to continuously deliver intelligent information to our customers around the world. Reducing the carbon footprint of our data centers is an important component of our environmental strategy and our business performance.

The Thomson Reuters Technology Operations group is actively engaged with leading industry and government organizations developing best practices and standards for reducing data center energy use. These organizations include:

• Green Grid – A global consortium working to reduce data center energy consumption. Thomson Reuters professionals currently hold leadership positions in the consortium, contributing to new, more stringent energy efficiency guidelines.
• Energy Star – A joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy to help identify energy efficient products and practices. Thomson Reuters is part of a consultation process for the development of Energy Star efficiency standards for IT.
• Uptime Institute – Focused on improving data center performance and IT productivity through benchmarking and collaborative learning.
• ASHRAE – The American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air conditioning Engineers, working on increasing the efficiency of data center cooling systems.
• SNIA – The Storage Networking Industry Association, a global consortium helping to define energy efficiency in the storage space.
• EU Code of Conduct for Data Centers – Thomson Reuters is an active Corporate Participant of the European Union voluntary code of conduct for improving data centre energy efficiency with the registration of our data center in London. Plans are underway to register other European sites.
