Head of the Arms Control department then East European and Soviet department  then Policy Planning Staff, Foreign & Commonwealth Office 1977-82. Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet 1985-88. Ambassador to Germany 1988-92 and to France 1993-96. Managing Director, UBS Investment Bank, 1996-2006. Chairman, Somerset House Trust 2002-2006. Trustee, Tate Gallery 1996-2002.

Appointed a Reuters Trustee in 1998.
