A non-executive director of several Danish and international companies. A Member of the Board of Trustees of the International Crisis Group, the GAVI Fund and the Estonian International Commission for Investigation of Crimes against Humanity. Member of the board of the Royal Theatre and Opera, Copenhagen. Chairman of the board, BankInvest Investment and Venture Funds. Author of a number of books on economics and politics. Chairman, Baltic Development Forum since 1998; Chairman, The Foreign Policy Society, Denmark since 1993. Adjunct Professor, Copenhagen Business School since 2005.

Member of the Danish Parliament (1977-2001); National Chairman of Denmark's Liberal Party (1984-98); Minister for Foreign Affairs, Denmark (1982-93); President of the European Liberal Party (1995-2000); Vice-president, Liberal International (1985-2000); Editor-in-Chief of the business daily Børsen (1975-76); commentator on economic and political affairs in the news department of Danish television (1970-75). In 1969 gained a Masters degree in Economics from Copenhagen University while working as a journalist, then business editor, for the daily Berlingske Aftenavis. In 1962 was appointed 1st Lieutenant in the Royal Danish Army and served in the Danish Defence Staff 1962-65.

Awarded the Robert Schuman Prize in 1993 and the Hansa Prize in 1987. Dr. h.c. at University of Gdansk in 2002.

Appointed a Reuters Trustee in 2001.
