James C. Smith
Chief Executive Officer, Professional Division
James C. Smith is Chief Executive Officer of the Professional Division of Thomson Reuters. He oversees the corporation's professional business information segments, including legal, tax and accounting, healthcare and science. Before assuming his current position, Mr. Smith served as Chief Operating Officer of The Thomson Corporation.
Previously, Mr. Smith was President and Chief Executive Officer of Thomson Learning's Academic and Reference Group, where he led the implementation of the higher education, academic publishing, courseware and reference business. Before that, he served as Executive Vice President for Human Resources and Administration for The Thomson Corporation, where he was responsible for human resources, succession planning, training and development, organizational development and various administrative activities.
Mr. Smith joined the Thomson Newspaper Group in 1987. He held several staff and operating positions, culminating in his role as head of operations for Thomson Newspapers in the U.S. With the sale of the Thomson Newspaper Group in 2000, he joined The Thomson Corporation in 2001 as Executive Vice President. He began his career as a journalist and held several editorial and general management positions prior to joining Thomson.
Mr. Smith graduated from Marshall University.
