CHALLENGE
The corporate benefits department of HCA, the nation’s leading provider of healthcare services, uses Medstat Advantage Suite® to aggregate, report, and analyze data from all of its benefits vendor partners. With 182 hospitals and 94 outpatient surgery centers in 22 states, England, and Switzerland, HCA is challenged to generate meaningful, timely, comprehensible, and actionable reports from mountains of data.
SOLUTION
With the assistance of Thomson Healthcare, HCA created, enhanced, and automated comprehensive dashboards and detailed reports it calls “PPO Snapshots.” Through graphs, tables, and charts, PPO Snapshots show how different parts of the organization perform.
The development and automation of PPO Snapshots has allowed HCA to:
- Monitor plan results
- Effect changes in network discounts, network penetration, and strategic plan changes
- Clearly communicate medical cost trends to HCA leadership
RESULTS
PPO Snapshots have allowed HCA to discover issues quickly and to respond to problems immediately. They have proved invaluable in negotiations with benefit vendors. HCA estimates that using PPO Snapshots has led to $2.3 million in savings from vendor negotiations, as well as $4.4 million from plan design changes and network monitoring.
In addition, the agile macros built by Thomson Healthcare to fully automate the dashboard reports have saved HCA significant time. Reports that used to take a week can now be generated in minutes.
