Senior Risk Reduction Demonstration is Testing a Comprehensive Approach to Reducing Health Risks

Under contract with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Thomson Reuters designed and is implementing a four-year national demonstration project, the Senior Risk Reduction Demonstration (SRRD), to test a comprehensive and systematic approach to reducing health risks among seniors.  The SRRD addresses multiple risks, including physical inactivity; obesity; smoking; depression; and high blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose.  These factors contribute to a number of chronic diseases including heart disease and stroke.  The project will also evaluate whether such interventions result in cost savings for Medicare.  Studies describing this initiative have been published in the peer-reviewed literature.

As part of their preparatory work on SRRD for CMS, our team evaluated the relative contribution of alternative health management programs offered to 59,324 retirees of a large manufacturing company.  The analysis used propensity score methods combined with multiple regression techniques to estimate the dollar savings accruing to Medicare through participation in one or more health promotion programs by comparing the experiences of participants with those of non-participants.  Findings were published in a peer-reviewed journal.
