Barclays Capital wins IFR's Bank of the Year

London - Thomson Reuters today announced the winners of the International Financing Review (IFR) Awards 2011.

IFR is the authoritative source of capital markets intelligence and the IFR Awards represent the key industry benchmark of global capital markets excellence. Winners are selected by IFR's independent, global team of expert reporters and analysts.

Key winners are below and a full list of winners can be found here:

Bank of the Year - Barclays Capital
Bond House - Deutsche Bank
Equity House - Morgan Stanley
Loan House - Barclays Capital
Securitisation House - Royal Bank of Scotland
Derivatives House - Barclays Capital
Restructuring Adviser - Houlihan Lokey
Emerging Markets Bond House - Deutsche Bank
Issuer of the Year - UK DMO

Commenting on Barclays Capital winning the coveted Bank of the Year Award, Matthew Davies, Editor of IFR, said: “2011 confirmed the transformation of Barclays Capital from a debt-focused middle-ranking investment bank to a firm with a place at the financial industry’s top table. Thanks in part to the audacious, if slightly fortuitous, purchase in 2008 of the US business of Lehman Brothers, it is now one of the two leading debt underwriters, a player of global significance in M&A, has enviable trading and derivatives businesses and is steadily building an ECM presence in the rest of the world to accompany its leading franchise in the US.

“That it has succeeded in achieving all this amid unprecedented challenges for global markets and banking is all the more remarkable.”

The IFR Awards will be presented at the 17th Annual IFR Awards Gala Dinner, attended by over 1,000 senior investment bankers on January 18th 2012 at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, President of Save The Children, will attend the dinner, which is the charity's largest annual fund raiser, and last year raised nearly £1.5m. Over £18m has been raised for Save The Children at IFR Awards dinners.

About IFR Awards
The IFR Awards are selected by IFR's expert capital markets journalists. Starting in October, the journalists start an exhausting round of interviews with hundreds of market participants. These meetings give an opportunity for capital markets professionals to stake their claim to individual awards and to give their views on the performance of their peers. They also give the reporters the chance to gauge the market’s thoughts on the most important transactions of the year. In addition, the IFR team takes soundings from treasurers and investors before deciding on a shortlist in each award category. The final decision is then made by the senior IFR editorial team.
