MEDIA ADVISORY: Times Square Digital Earth Day Awareness Campaign to Reach Millions

Thomson Reuters and NASDAQ OMX dedicate their Times Square signage to facts about environmental sustainability in an effort to educate passersby (an estimated 1.5 million people per day) and celebrate Earth Day.

The signage will also feature information on how New York residents can switch to renewable energy through ConEdison Solutions’ WIND Power Program, supplied by Community Energy, a marketer and developer of wind energy.

The signage loops throughout the day April 21-25, 2009, and can be scheduled if broadcast visuals are required for a specific time.

Background:
Thomson Reuters and NASDAQ OMX remain continually committed to bettering our world through the use of Times Square’s most visible signage, Thomson Reuters signage and the NASDAQ MarketSite Tower. Throughout the week, the signage (which will remain mostly dark to conserve energy), will display a “What Can You Do?” series about the environment, encouraging people to take action to preserve the Earth’s resources. Informational topics include:

  • 1/3 of the garbage generated in the U.S. is from packaging.
WHAT CAN YOU DO? Cut back on single-serving and individually wrapped goods. Purchase brands with less packaging.
  • There are currently 400 million people worldwide facing severe water shortages. According to the United Nations, that number will be 4 billion by 2050.
WHAT CAN YOU DO? Be conscious of water use when washing dishes and showering, and fix leaks.

Last fall, Thomson Reuters signage featured facts and tips to recognize the company’s Green Week. This year, the effort expanded to include information on ConEdison Solutions’ WIND Power Program, supplied by Community Energy. Consumers can contact ConEdison Solutions at 1-800-320-8991 or www.NewWindEnergy.com/NYC for more information about purchasing WIND power.

In addition to the partnership with the WIND Power Program, Thomson Reuters and NASDAQ OMX promoted the World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour by turning off their digital signage to demonstrate both organizations’ commitment to global, social causes such as environmental sustainability. Earth Hour took place Saturday, March 28, 2009, between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. ET.
