We believe that our products and services ought to be delivered in ways that best meet our customers' needs. To that end, Thomson Reuters provides a variety of methods to access our content in a way that fits with your existing workflow. Thomson Reutes data can delivered in XML format via FTP (data files) or API. Our data is also available through Reuters proprietary applications or third-party channels.
Data Files via FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
Data Files (usually in XML format) meet the demands of users who need to store and manipulate the data, integrate the data into proprietary analysis or merge the data with other data sets. The files are usually designed to be database ready and work at various levels to meet different user groups' requirements -- At the most basic level, users can build a system that will store current data and create custom reports with their own 'look and feel'. Users with more complex needs can create a full time series database to mirror the Thomson Reuters database and track data changes over time, analyze historical performance, do proprietary modeling and perform custom queries and calculations.
How It Works:
- A data file is generated from Thomson Reuters database on a scheduled basis.
- The data file is placed on Thomson Reuters FTP server and a client is given an ID and password to access the FTP and retrieve the file.
- On the client-side, a script is written to extract all data, or a sub-set of licensed data, which is then stored in a client's database.
- From the database, a client can manipulate the data and/or design reports with their own look and feel.
XML API (Application Programming Interface)
XML API is a hosted solution where the content resides at Reuters but is offered seamlessly through the client's Internet or Intranet, relieving clients from tasks associated with data and server management (downloading the data, building and managing the database, creating loading and retrieval routines). This solution allows you to define the display, customization, and use of the information tightly integrated with your web site or application.
How It Works:
- A user searches for company information by entering search parameters into a user interface.
- Reuters XML API takes the search parameters and sends the query to the Thomson Reuters database.
- Reuters sends requested information back to the client through the API. Data is processed through a client side style sheet or application, and presented to the user.
