Error: element has an invalid value according to data type in Personal Tax

Scenario

Your client has already declared a capital gain and paid tax on this. When you prepare their tax return, they are now due a repayment of some of the capital gains tax already paid. Personal, Business and Trust Tax handles the refund differently according to the version:
  • Version 21.0 of Personal, Business, and Trust Tax populates box CAL5 (box 5 on the tax calculation pages) with a negative figure and box CAL1 also reflects this refund, but there's an error when you file it.
  • Version 21.1 does not reflect the refund in boxes CAL5 and CAL1, but the summary computation does include it. CAL5 includes 0.00, which causes an error.
You may get the following error message when you use either versoin 21.0 or 21.1.
Error message
Error: The 'http://www.govtalk.gov.uk/taxation/SA/SA100/xx-xx/1:CapitalGainsTaxDue' element has an invalid value according to its data type. [XPath:'/IRenvelope/MTR/SA110/SelfAssessment/CapitalGainsTaxDue'] [Contents:'0.00'].

Cause

HMRC have confirmed the following points.
  • They are addressing the problem and will publish guidance on GOV.UK.
  • Capital Gains Tax refunds can't be given within Self-Assessment.
  • To claim the refund, contact HMRC after submission through the normal channels, such as the agent line or customer helpline. HMRC will review the claim and make any refund due. The method of repayment is likely to be determined by how the customer completed the repayment section on the return.
  • There's no need to change the online CGT payment for Property Disposal return. The repayment will be dealt with fully through the self-assessment return process.
