Address verification tips and tricks

Address verification ensures accuracy of city, county, state, and ZIP Codes. This helps determine the correct taxes. Follow these tips and tricks to handle addresses that don't verify automatically.

Non-standard addresses

Sometimes your clients may give you addresses that won't verify. Some common address challenges include:
  • P.O. Boxes
  • Foreign addresses (including Puerto Rico)
  • Military addresses
  • Apartments
  • Reservations
  • Addresses without USPS delivery

Partially verify an address

For a non-standard address, follow these steps to partially verify the address, then enter the rest of the information.
  1. Select
    Setup
    ,
    Employees
    , then the
    Main
    tab.
  2. In the Addresses section, enter the city, state, or ZIP Code in the
    Lookup
    field.
  3. Select the magnifying glass, or use the TAB or ENTER keys.
  4. Enter the 1st 2 lines of the street address in the fields before the
    Lookup
    field.
For states with local taxes:
  • Aim for full verification (green bars next to address).
  • Use a nearby address in the same tax area if needed.
  • Keep the original as the mailing address.

Courtesy withholding

For employees living and working in different areas:
  1. Select
    Setup
    , then
    Clients
    .
  2. Do 1 of the following:
    • Go to the
      Payroll Taxes
      tab and mark
      Nexus
      .
    • Select
      Local
      , then mark
      Nexus
      .
