Inactive clients

When a client closes their business or you no longer provide services for the client, you can make the client inactive so that they don’t appear in the standard list of active clients or on firm-level reports. Do the following to change the status of a client to Inactive and work with inactive client records.

Change a client's status to inactive

  1. In the
    Clients
    screen, select the client, then select
    Edit
    .
  2. Select the
    Main
    tab and in the
    Inactive date
    field, enter the date the client closed their business or the date you ceased providing services for the client.
  3. In the
    Inactive reason
    field, select either
    Business closed
    ,
    Business sold
    , or
    Canceled service
    .
  4. (Optional) You can also choose to enter more detailed notes in the
    Explanation
    field.
  5. Select
    Enter
    . The client will now be removed from the active client list.

Display inactive clients in the
Clients
screen

To make changes to inactive clients, you'll need to first display them in the
Clients
screen.
In the
Clients
screen, mark the
Include inactive
checkbox. The IDs and names of inactive clients display in italics in the client list.

Exclude inactive clients from reports

By default, inactive clients are included on firm reports. Use the following steps to filter out any inactive clients and display information only for clients with an Active status.
  1. Select
    File
    ,
    Print Reports
    , then select the firm report you want to print.
  2. In the Filtering and Sorting section, select the
    Client
    tab (if present).
  3. In the
    Filter by
    field, select
    Status
    .
  4. In the
    Method
    field, select
    is
    .
  5. In the
    Selected
    dropdown menu, select
    Active
    .

Make inactive clients active

To designate an inactive client as active again (if the business re-opens or you reinstate services for the client, for example), follow these steps.
  1. Select
    Setup
    , then
    Clients
    and mark the
    Include inactive
    checkbox, if it's not already marked, to display the client record in the list.
  2. Select the
    Main
    tab, then select
    Edit
    .
  3. Remove the date in the
    Inactive date
    field in the
    Main
    tab of the
    Clients
    screen.
  4. Select
    Enter
    to save the changes. The client will now display in the active client list.
