Unable to apply software updates via CS Connect

Try the following when you're unable to apply CS Connect updates:
  1. In Fixed Assets CS, select
    Help
    then
    About Fixed Assets CS
. Verify that you're not trying to apply an update to a version of the program you haven't yet installed. For example, if you're on version 13.2 and the update is for version 14.1.4, then you will not be able to apply the update successfully until you install the 2014.1 web download.
  2. Restart your computer and apply the updates with no other applications running.
  3. Verify that no client locks exist. Client locks can be found and removed by selecting
    Help
    ,
    Repair
    , then
    File Locks
    .
  4. If you are on a network, try to apply the update from a different workstation or from the server.
  5. Delete contents of the Updates directory, and redownload the updates. To do this, go to
    Help
    ,
    Repair
    , then
    Misc
    and select the
    Clear Updates Directory
or open Windows Explorer and navigate to
    X:\WinCSI\DSW\Updates
, where X is the drive letter where the program is installed. Delete everything except the Data folder within the Updates folder, and then use CS Connect to redownload and apply updates.
  6. Reboot in Safe Mode with Networking. In Safe Mode, many non-essential Windows services are turned off. The video card in your computer, which lets you set the size of icons and your screen resolution, is also turned off. This will eliminate any conflicts that may be occurring while running the desktop setup installation. To boot up in Safe Mode, do the following:
    1. Choose
      Start
      ,
      Shut Down
      , or
      Restart
      .
    2. When your workstation begins to boot up, continuously select your F8 function key. This will prompt your computer to boot up in Safe Mode. When you're prompted with the option, select
      Safe Mode with Networking
      .
    3. Once Windows is in Safe Mode, try applying the updates again.
  7. Disable anti-virus and/or firewalls. Note that starting your computer in safe mode doesn't necessarily disable all anti-virus applications. Refer to your anti-virus software vendor's help resources for information about disabling their software. If disabling anti-virus solves the update issue, you may need to add the WinCSI directory to your anti-virus software exceptions list.
  8. Reinstall: If updating keeps failing, it's recommended that you reinstall Fixed Assets CS using the most recent Fixed Assets CS web download. Once the program is reinstalled, download and apply the updates again via CS Connect.
