Amend a return - Form 1040-X

Prepare and e-file an amended return

To amend a federal return:
  1. If e-filing the federal amended return, create a copy of the return.
  2. In the new return, perform a full recompute.
  3. Go to
    Organizer
    ,
    General Information
    ,
    Amended Return
    , and then
    Basic Data 1040-X
    .
  4. Select
    Filed Return was Computed on this software (system will compute original data)
    .
  5. Select
    Original return was e-filed
    .
  6. Enter applicable information for steps 3 and 4.
  7. Perform a full recompute again before making any changes.
  8. Enter changes throughout the return using the regular Organizer input screens.
  9. Go to
    Organizer
    ,
    General Information
    ,
    Amended Return
    ,
    Explanation
     and enter the explanation of change.
  10. After completing all changes, perform a full recompute.
  11. Review the return in
    Tax Forms
     view or
    Print Preview
    .
  12. To e-file, go to
    Organizer
    ,
    E-file
    ,
    Enable/Create
    , and select the
    Return
     tab on the spreadsheet.
  13. Enable the Federal return.
  14. Enter other required information for the e-file.
  15. If amending a state return, go to
    Organizer
    ,
    States
    ,
    [state]
    ,
    Amended Return
    .
  16. Select
    Original return was prepared using this software
    .
  17. Select
    Print 1040X and the complete [state] return
    .
  18. Fully recompute again before making any changes.
  19. Make necessary changes to the return using the regular Organizer input screens.
  20. Next go to
    Organizer
    ,
    States
    ,
    [state]
    ,
    Amended Return
    , and then
    Amended Return
     again.
  21. Enter required information and the explanation of changes (unless you're using the federal explanation for the state).
  22. And lastly, do another full recompute and view the return in Tax Forms or print preview.
