Identity protection PIN (IP PIN)

The IRS IP PIN is a 6-digit number assigned to eligible taxpayers to help prevent the misuse of their Social Security Number (SSN) on fraudulent federal income tax returns. A new IP PIN will be generated each year.

Who's eligible for an IP PIN?

Anyone who has an SSN or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) and is able to verify their identity is eligible to enroll into the IP PIN program.
For details regarding identity protection PINs, see IRS FAQs about the Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN).
tip
  • If the IRS issued the taxpayer an IP PIN and the taxpayer lost it or didn't receive a new one in the mail, they must obtain an IP PIN before they can e-file.
  • Remove the identity protection PIN when filing extensions as it's only used on federal Forms 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ, and 1040PR/SS.
