Sign 1041 e-file

Fiduciary federal tax returns e-filed by tax practitioners may be signed electronically using a personal identification number (PIN). You may use either the practitioner PIN method or Form 8453-FE.
PIN options can be selected in
Organizer
,
E-file
, and then
Signature Authorization
.
  1. On the
    Signature Authorization
screen, indicate who entered the PIN: the fiduciary/officer or the preparer/ERO. If you select fiduciary or officer and select Form 8453-FE as the PIN type, Form 8879 won't print. If you select preparer/ERO, Form 8879-F prints for the fiduciary to sign. The preparer must keep the signed Form 8879-F for 3 years. This form doesn't need to be sent to the IRS.
  2. If you chose to use the practitioner PIN, you can select to generate random PINs for the fiduciary or officer.
  3. You can also use the first 5 numbers of the firm EIN as the ERO PIN. After recompute, the PINs will appear.
  4. You can select to print the fiduciary PIN on the Form 1041, Page 1 signature line.
  5. Enter the 5-digit PIN (the number can't be all zeros) for the fiduciary (if filing jointly).
  6. Enter the ERO PIN.
  7. And lastly, enter the date the PINs were entered into the system.

Practitioner PIN

The Practitioner PIN method's an additional signature method for taxpayers who use an ERO (electronic return originator) to sign their returns by using a 5-digit PIN. The Practitioner PIN method doesn't require taxpayer to enter their adjusted gross income (AGI) or PIN from the prior year. This method requires the taxpayer and Practitioner to sign Form 8879-F, IRS E-file Signature Authorization.

Form 8453-FE

Tax practitioners no longer submit a paper signature for e-filed returns by using Form 8453. Instead, Form 8453-FE, U.S. Estate or Trust Income Tax Declaration and Signature for Electronic Filing, gets used to transmit supporting paper documents that are required to be submitted to the IRS with e-filed returns.
