R0000-230 e-file error

IRS regulations require any entity with an EIN to update the Responsible Party Information within 60 days of any change by filing Form 8822-B, Change of Address or Responsible Party - Business. It is critical that the IRS have accurate Responsible Party Information in cases of identity theft or other fraud issues related to EINs or business accounts. This error can be either an informational e-file alert or an IRS rejection. Double-check that you have entered the correct EIN for this return.

Solution

  1. If you get this error as an e-file alert:
    1. Go to Organizer, then select Federal E-file.
    2. Select
      Additional Information
      , then
      Additional Information
      again.
    3. Select
      Yes
      for
      Does the IRS have the most current Responsible Party information on file?
      .
  2. If you get this as an error, it means the IRS database doesn't match the data in the electronic file. Check the information to make sure the following is correct:
    1. tax period ending date
    2. return type
    3. EIN
    4. business name control
  3. Re-compute and re-create the e-file.
  4. If the information you entered is correct, contact the IRS e-file help desk at (866) 255-0654 to verify what they have on file.
