9501 and 9982 Missing Federal File e-file errors

State was being checked in, but we could not find a federal file. Reject code 9982 is similar to Reject Code 9501 in that both of these errors are due to needing the Federal Copy or Federal e-file attached to the state return.
This error is caused when you need to attach the Federal Copy to the state return.

Solution

  1. Go to
    Organizer > States > State E-file > Enable/Create > Federal Copy tab
  2. Select the option
    Federal Copy
    selected for the state in Column B. Some states limit the Federal Copy options you can choose, so make sure your selection creates a qualified federal file.
  3. If the state is being filed as a single company from a member of a consolidation, select
    Attach a federal XML created in a different locator/binder
    under Column B for
    Federal Copy
    .
  4. Verify that the top consolidated locator's information is entered correctly under Column G for
    Federal EIN
    , Column H for
    Locator Number
    , and Column I for
    Account Number
    .
  5. If the return files as a single company for both federal and state, verify that the current locator's information is entered correctly under Column G for
    Federal EIN
    , Column H for
    Locator Number
    , and Column I for
    Account Number
    .
