F1040-174-03 e-file error

If Form 1040, 'CommPropStateRtnInd' is checked, then [the filing status of the return must be single or married filing separately or head of household] and Form 8958 must be present.
The IRS needs Form 8958 for married filing separate returns with a community property state (AZ, CA, LA, NM, NV, TX, WA, and WI) entered for the address of the 1040 screen.

Solution

  1. Complete the ComPSt screen in the General folder.

    You can enter 0 in the fields on this screen if necessary.
  2. Re-create and retransmit the e-file.

  • This IRS error code doesn't consider the scenario where a taxpayer lived in a community property state in the tax year, but moved in the processing year, and therefore needs an electronically filed Community Property State Allocation Record.
    • For these returns, change the filing status to married filing joint, or file the return on paper with an Allocation Worksheet.
  • This IRS error code doesn't consider the scenario where the taxpayer didn't live in a community property state in the tax year, but moved to a community property state in the processing year, and therefore doesn't need an electronically filed Community Property State Allocation Record.
    • For these returns, change the filing status to married filing joint, or file the return on paper.
