  1. Go to the
    General input
    folder.
  2. Select the
    General
    screen.
  3. Open the
    Dependent
    statement.
  4. Make sure
    Date of Birth
    is correct for each dependent.
  5. For any dependents over age 17, change the
    Dep Code
    to 3, 4, 7 or 8.
    note
Choosing one of those codes excludes them from Child Tax Credit consideration.
  6. If the dependent is under the age of 17, you'll need to ask the taxpayer to contact the Social Security Administration at 800-772-1213 to verify the date of birth they have on file:
    • If the date of birth is incorrect, have them correct it. It could take up to 10 days for the change to affect the IRS e-file database.
    • If the date of birth is correct, have the taxpayer contact the IRS at 800-829-1040 to verify the date of birth on file and to correct it.
  7. When the IRS and SSA have the correct date of birth, you can either:
    • Re-create and retransmit the return.
    • Paper file the return.
