IND-181-01 e-file error

The Primary Taxpayer did not enter a valid Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN). Please visit www.irs.gov/getanippin for further information and resubmit your return with the correct number. (value #########, rule IND-181-01).
You'll get this error if the taxpayer was issued an IP PIN, but it's not in the return.

Solution

  1. Go to the
    Electronic Filing
    folder.
  2. Select the
    IDAuth
    tab.
  3. Find the Identity Protection PIN section.
  4. Enter the 6-digit identity protection PIN in
    Taxpayer
    .
    note
    This PIN needs to match the PIN provided by the IRS for the current tax year.
  5. If the taxpayer doesn't know their PIN, or if you receive this rejection multiple times, ask the taxpayer to follow the IRS's instructions to retrieve their IP PIN.
