IND-512-01 e-file error

Each 'DependentSSN' in 'DependentDetail' in the return (or Qualifying Child Identifying Number on Form 1040-SS (PR)) must not be the same as Spouse SSN on another return filed for the same tax year. (value #########, rule IND-512-01)
note
The value represents the SSN of the dependent causing the rejection.
You'll get this error code if a dependent claimed as an exemption on the return was entered as the taxpayer or spouse on another return on which they claimed their exemption.

Solution

Review the following items to resolve the error code.
  • Determine if the dependent submitted their own return and failed to indicate that they can be claimed on another return. If the dependent's data was entered incorrectly, make the corrections and retransmit the return.
  • Do 1 of the following for dependents who submitted their own return and claimed their exemption:
    • Remove the dependent from the parent's return and resubmit.
    • If the parents should claim the exemption, they need to file a return on paper with Form 8948. You'll need to amend the dependent's return.
  • If you're the tax professional, contact the IRS e-help Desk at 866.255.0654 for assistance in determining which individual was claimed on another return. If you're the taxpayer, contact the IRS Accounts Management at 800.829.0922 for assistance.
