IND-516-02 e-file error

Incorrect Data: /Return/ReturnHeader/Filer/PrimarySSN: If Form 1040, 'PrimaryClaimAsDependentInd' is not checked, then the Primary SSN must not be the same as a Dependent SSN on another return filed for the same tax year. (value, rule IND-516-02)
The IRS e-File database says the taxpayer's SSN was used on a different return to claim a dependent exemption. This might happen when a student tries to file their own tax return and claim themselves after their parents filed a tax return and claimed the student as a dependent.

Solution

  1. Go to the General folder.
  2. Select the 1040 screen.
  3. Check the taxpayer's
    SSN
    .
    1. If there's a typo or incorrect information, correct it. Then re-create and retransmit the e-file.
    2. If the taxpayer was correctly claimed as a dependent on a different tax return, mark
      Dependent of another
. Then recreate and retransmit the electronic file.
    3. If the taxpayer shouldn't be claimed as a dependent, file the tax return on paper with Form 8948 and contact the IRS at 866.366.0654 for more information.
