IND-544 e-file error

If there are dependents provided on the return, then the Primary SSN in the Return Header must not be the same as a Dependent SSN on a previously accepted return for the same tax period. (value #########, rule IND-544)
You'll get this error if the SSN entered for the return was entered for a dependent on another return accepted by the IRS.

Solution

Check the following:
  • If the taxpayer isn't a dependent, check the SSN:
    1. Go to the General folder.
    2. Select the 1040 screen.
    3. Check the
      SSN
      field for accuracy.
    4. Correct any typos or incorrect information, then recreate and retransmit the e-file.
  • If this return is filed on behalf of a college age dependent:
    1. Go to the General folder.
    2. Select the 1040 screen.
    3. Check that the
      Dependent of Another
      and
      Meets certain children age 18 through 23
      fields are correctly populated.
    4. Correct any typos or incorrect information, then recreate and retransmit the e-file.
