IND-680-01 e-file error

If the Spouse SSN in the Return Header is under the age of 16 and did not file a tax return in the previous year, then the 'PINTypeCd' must not have the value "Self-Select Practitioner". (value, rule IND-680-01)
Spouses under the age of 16 need to have filed a tax return in any prior year to qualify to use the self-select PIN.

Solution

If the spouse is under the age of 16 and has never filed a tax return:
  • File the return on paper with Form 8948, or
  • Use the Practitioner PIN method:
    1. Select
      Setup
      , then
      Office Configuration
      .
    2. Select the
      E-Filing
      tab, then
      ERO
      .
    3. Mark the
Practitioner PIN Program filer (1040 only)
      checkbox.
    4. Go to the Electronic Filing folder.
    5. Select the PIN screen.
    6. Make sure the
      Self-Select PIN
      field is clear.
    7. Re-create and retransmit the e-file.
If the spouse is under the age of 16 and filed a tax return in a prior year:
  1. Go to the Electronic Filing folder.
  2. Mark the
Taxpayer or spouse under age 16 and previously filed a return
    field.
  3. Re-create and retransmit the e-file.
note
If you mark the
Taxpayer or spouse under age 16 and previously filed a return
field and the return still gets the error, it's because of an error in the IRS master file. You need to file the return using the practitioner PIN method, or you can file it on paper.
