IND-996 e-file error

The Dependent/Qualifying Person Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) provided on the return is not valid. Please visit www.irs.gov/getanippin for further information and resubmit your return with the correct number.
You'll get this error if a dependent on the return has an Identity Protection PIN and you enter the wrong PIN on the return.

Solution

  1. Verify the PIN information with the client.
  2. Go to the General folder.
  3. Select the 1040 screen.
  4. Open the
    Dependent
    statement.
  5. Check the PIN in the IP PIN column.
  6. Correct any typos or incorrect information, then re-create and retransmit the e-file.
  7. If you don't know the PIN, or if you receive this rejection multiple times, have the taxpayer retrieve the dependent's IP PIN or file the return on paper.
