Prepare Form 2848 Power of Attorney or Form 8821 Tax Information Authorization

  1. General Information:
  2. In a return, go to the
    POA
    screen in the Separate Filings folder.
  3. Enter
    T
    ,
    S
    , or
    J
    for the person you're preparing the Form for.
    note
    If you leave this blank, you'll get the default: Taxpayer.
  4. Enter the taxpayer or spouse's Employer Identification Number in the
    EIN
    , if needed.
  5. Select a form from
    Power of Attorney / Tax Information Authorization
    :
    • 1 = Form 2848
      .
    • 2 = Form 8821
      .
    • 3 = Both
      .
      note
      If you leave this blank, you won't generate a form.
  6. Complete the remaining General Information section.
  7. Enter information in the Forms 2848 and 8821 — Acts Authorized or Deleted and Executor or Personal Representative for Deceased Individual sections, as needed.
  8. Representative/Appointee Information:
  9. Enter or choose the representative in the
    Name
    column.

    • If you've entered representative information for Preparers, they’ll appear in the dropdown list. To enter this information, go to
      Setup
      ,
      Office Configuration
      , then
      Preparers
      .
    • The remaining columns are completed with the information entered within the preparers setup.
  10. Repeat step 7 on a new row in the statement for each representative.
    note
    • You can't file Form 2848 or Form 8821 electronically with individual tax returns.
    • You can enter more than 4 representatives in the statement, but only the 1st 4 representatives show on Form 2848 and Form 8821.
