entry is included in the spouse's return when split. All other entries in this field are go to the taxpayer's return.

Dependents

Dependents entered in the
Dependent information
statement window in the 1040 screen are included in the filing status optimization calculation. The system optimizes dependents coded
J
and assigns them to the taxpayer or the spouse. It makes this calculation based on which scenario has the greatest tax savings for a status of married filing separately. Dependents coded
T
or blank are assigned to the taxpayer. Dependents coded
S
are always assigned to the spouse. When dependents coded
J
are present in the return, the filing status optimization process takes longer to complete.
