Complete and e-file Form 1040X amended returns and 1040-SS corrected returns
Requirements
You can e-file an amended 1040 return if it meets these requirements:
Current tax year return and prior 2 tax years.
The original form was a 1040 or 1040-SR (the original return will need to have been electronically filed for 2020 returns).
The original form was a 1040-NR starting with 2022.
The original form was a 1040-SS return starting with 2022.
note
The IRS refers to amended 1040-SS returns as Corrected returns. 1040X isn't included for a Corrected 1040-SS return.
Taxpayer and Spouse SSN match the original return.
Amend the return
Do the following to amend a 1040 return:
Select
File
, then
Open Client
. Select the return you want to amend.
Select

.
Close the preserved return and open the original return to make changes.
Do a print preview of the return.
Review the Form 1040 to verify it has the same information originally reported to the IRS. For now, make a note of whether it's the same.
Go to the
Amend
screen in the
Separate Filings
folder.
If the Form 1040 matches what was originally reported to the IRS, mark the
Transfer original information
checkbox. All the amounts from the return will automatically transfer to the screen.
If the Form 1040 doesn't match what was originally reported, enter the original amounts in the fields on the screen. Don't mark the
Transfer original information
checkbox.
If you're also amending a state return:
Select the state in the
Transfer state(s)?
window.
Mark the
Transfer original information
checkbox on each state's Amend screen.
To amend the state return only, leave this screen blank and mark the
Transfer original information
checkbox in the state’s
Amend
screen.
Enter information in the
Explanation of changes
field. The Form 1040X won't fill out unless you've entered something in this field.
Make your changes to the return on the other data entry screens. For example, to change the wages, go to the
W2
screen and enter the correct wage amount.
Print or e-file the return. There are special data entry requirements for e-filing Form 1040X.
note
You can't amend prior-year returns in the current-year application. Amended returns can only be completed using the same version of the application that was originally used.
For domestic partner returns:
To amend the federal return, follow the amend process in the single federal return.
To amend the state return, complete the amend process in the combined state return.
Electronically file the amended return

note
When you create the e-file, the return type in CS Connect will still show as Form 1040. You can verify it's the amended return by finding the word “Amended” in the XML.
note
You can use the same taxpayer and spouse PINs that were used for the originally filed Form 1040.
Form 8879 will print the text “Amended” at the top of the form when it's for electronically filing the amended return.
Form 8879 will print the text “Corrected” at the top of the form when it's for electronically filing a corrected Form 1040-SS.
Form 1040-V won’t print and can't be submitted with a paper filed Form 1040-X.
Form 1040-V can be generated and printed with an electronically filed Form 1040-X.
