Business rule and Schema failure errors

Schema failure error

A schema failure error occurs when data is not formatted in an acceptable manner in the electronic record, while there are exceptions.
For example, a U.S. ZIP Code included in the electronic record that's not exactly 5 digits or 9 digits may produce a schema failure error. Warning messages display for schema failures detected during the e-file error checking process.

Schema failure errors and federal attachments

When filing the California Form 540/540NR return electronically and including the federal attachment, the federal attachment needs to be free of all schema failure errors, regardless of whether the federal return is actually being filed with the IRS. Otherwise, it's likely that the California FTB will reject the return.
To ensure that the federal attachment is free of schema errors, run the e-file error checker on the federal return. Clear all schema failure errors before submitting the California return.

Business rule error

A business rule error happens when the return includes an incorrect calculation or other information contrary to taxing agency validations, while there are exceptions.
For example, overriding a field on a return that results in a math error may result in a business rule error. Warning messages are displayed for business rule errors detected during the e-file error checking process. Usually, error codes for business rules contain a combination of letters and numbers.

Business rule errors and federal attachments

While California FTB encourages you to clear all error codes, it won't reject the Form 540/540NR return based on the presence of business rule errors in the federal attachment.
