folder to generate the Louisiana Form IT-540 extension. The Louisiana Department of Revenue may waive certain penalties if a taxpayer files an extension request. Louisiana doesn't waive the Fail to Pay penalty unless the taxpayer has paid all tax by the original due date. Thus, the purpose of filing an extension request by the original due date is to waive the Louisiana Fail to File penalty on any tax still due as of the original due date.
note
Details on the Louisiana extension:
The Department of Revenue supports electronic filing and electronic funds withdrawal for the extension and the payment.
The Louisiana accepts federal Form 4868 as the extension request, subject to certain provisions.
You can also make payments online or via telephone.

Paper filing only:
If you're submitting payment by nonelectronic means, complete all necessary information on noncalculating Form R-2867. Note that Form R-2867 doesn't serve as the extension request. If there's no balance due or calculated amount:
If you're filing electronically, Louisiana accepts the extension request even if there's no authorization for electronic funds withdrawal of payment. Prepare the return after filing an extension
When preparing an extended return, make sure you have the following information from the extension.
Amount actually paid with extension:
The amount paid with extension is reported in the Payments section of Form IT-540. Enter the amount on the
LAExt
screen in the
Extension payment actually made; reportable on main return
field. Note that UltraTax CS populates this field when the extension was created if UltraTax CS calculated the amount or if the amount was forced. Change the data entry for this amount if the taxpayer paid some other amount.
note
If an extension was filed another way other than UltraTax CS, enter the actual amount paid with extension in the
Force
field. By doing so, this will automatically complete data entry in other fields, including fields for extended due date and amount actually paid with extension.
Date return filed:
Enter the
Date return filed
on the
LAPen
screen. If the date exceeds the extended due date, UltraTax CS calculates a late penalty on the unpaid balance due.
Extension not required to be attached to return:
The Louisiana Department of Revenue doesn't require a copy of federal or state extension when paper filing the return.
