Prepare Form M1 extension

You can use the
MNExt
screen in the
Payments
folder to generate the Minnesota Form M1 voucher. The Minnesota Department of Revenue waives certain penalties if taxpayer has met certain payments criteria by the original due date of the return. If such criteria are met, the extension is automatic. Therefore, the MDOR doesn't have an extension request form. Instead, the MDOR provides a payment voucher.
To waive certain penalties, Minnesota doesn't require an extension request  if the taxpayer has already paid 90% of the tax due by the original due date.

Prepare the extension

There are various approaches to preparing an extension.
  • Have UltraTax CS calculate a balance due with extension based on current data entry and calculations on the return:
    Enter
    X
    in the
    Calculate Extension
    field on the
    MNExt
    screen. Select
    Setup
    ,
    1040 Individual
    , the
    Federal
    tab, then
    Extensions
to select the method for calculating the amount. Note that when using
    File
    then
    Print Extensions
to select multiple clients at once for electronic filing, UltraTax CS marks the
    Calculate Extension
    field if the
Create an extension without total tax liability amounts
    checkbox isn't marked.
  • Force the amount:
    Enter an amount in the
    Balance due on extension (Force)
    field on the
    MNExt
    screen.
  • If no balance is due or there's a calculated amount:
Although UltraTax CS supports printing Form M1 without an amount, the Minnesota Department of Revenue requests that taxpayers don't submit the voucher unless there's an accompanying payment.
Select
File
then
Print Extensions
to print Form M1 when data entry is complete on the
MNExt
screen.

Prepare the return after filing

When preparing an extended return, make sure you have the following information from the extension.
  • Amount actually paid with extension:
The amount paid with extension is reported on Form M1. Enter the amount on the
    MNExt
    screen in the
Extension payment actually made; reportable on main return
field. Note that UltraTax CS populates this field when the extension was created if the application calculated amount or if you forced the amount. Change the data entry if the taxpayer paid some other amount.
  • Date return filed:
    Enter the
    Date return filed
    on the
    MNPen
screen. If the date exceeds the extended due date, UltraTax CS calculates late penalty on the unpaid balance due.
  • Extension not required to be attached to return:
The Minnesota Department of Revenue doesn't require a copy of federal or state extension when filing the return.
