Make a payment

Instead of printing a voucher and having your client mail a check, encourage them to either make a payment:
  • Directly from their bank account (free).
  • By credit card (2.25% convenience fee) using a New York State Department of Taxation and Finance Online Services account.
For instructions, go to the New York Department of Taxation and Finance's Make a personal income tax return payment online page. If your client receives a bill after their return is filed, in addition to using the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance Online Services account payment options, they can pay directly from a bank account using the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance Quick Pay tool without having an account. Go to the Pay a bill or notice page for more information.

Recordkeeping checklist

Before claiming a credit or itemized deduction, review the recordkeeping checklists to ensure your client has the documents needed in the event additional information is requested after filing.

Review and verify estimated payments

Before you file your client's return, you can review the amount of tax that they have prepaid using the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance Online Services. An Online Services account provides a comprehensive overview of payments made to the Tax Department, including estimated tax payments, extension payments, and credits carried forward. Verifying their account balance will avoid discrepancies and prevent a delay in processing their return.
