File and attach Form 8865 to electronic files

Follow these steps to e-file and attach Form 8865 to a Form 1041 e-file return.
  1. Create the electronic file for the 8865 return.
  2. With the 1041 client's return open, select
    Edit
    , then
    Electronic Filing Attachments
    .
  3. Select
    Add
    .
  4. Select
    Federal
     from the
    Product
     field dropdown.
  5. Select
    Tax Return
     from the
    Return
     field dropdown.
  6. Select
    8865 E-file
     from the
    Attachment title
     field dropdown.
  7. In the Attachment file source section, select
    8865
    ,
    Browse
    , then go to and select the Form 8865 electronic file. The electronic file will have a .xef extension.
    note
    • The 8865 electronic file is located in
      X:\Wincsi\UT22Data\$SYSDATA\attachments
      .
    • If you're running UltraTax CS through Virtual Office CS or Software as a Service (SaaS), go to
      Y:\UT22Data\$SYSDATA\attachments
       to select the XEF file. This location is selected by default when you select
      Browse
      .
    • If you want to proforma this attachment next year, mark the
      Proforma information to next year
       checkbox.
  8. Select
    OK
     to return to the
    Electronic Filing Attachments
     window.
  9. Repeat steps 2 through 8 to attach more Forms 8865.
  10. Select
    OK
     to close the window when you've attached all Forms 8865.
  11. Create the electronic file for the filer's return. UltraTax CS will include Form 8865 in the filer’s electronic file.
    note
    • You can file Form 8865 returns electronically only if filing Form 990, 1040, 1041, 1120, 1120S, or 1065.
    • You can attach multiple Form 8865 electronic files to the filer’s return, as necessary.
    • Form 8865 electronic files should pass all UltraTax CS electronic filing error checking before you attach Form 8865 electronic files to the filer’s electronic file.
