Prepare 1041 extensions

Do the following to print federal and state extension forms for 1 client or a batch of clients.
note
This procedure prints 1 copy of the extension following the government collation defined in the
Return Collation
window. If desired, you can change this collation. For example, to prevent the extension transmittal letter and extension filing instructions from printing with the extension, change the print condition for the extension transmittal letter and extension filing instructions to
Never
in the government collation in the
Return Collation
window in
Setup
then
1041 Fiduciary
.
  1. Open the client you want to file an extension for. If the client doesn't yet exist in the current-year application, proforma the prior-year client or add a new client.
  2. To print an extension, do the following:
    1. Enter any additional information on the
      PayExt
      screen in the
      Payments
      folder.
    2. If applicable, retrieve general ledger balances from Write-Up CS or Trial Balance CS for each client an extension should be filed for.
    3. Access other input screens as needed to enter the preliminary tax data UltraTax CS should use when calculating the tax.
      note
You can specify a balance due by entering an amount in the
      Balance due on extension (Force)
      field in the
      PayExt
      screen.
  3. Each client's name, address, and extension date prints on the form. UltraTax CS assumes the following extended dates. If a date other than the default date is required, enter the date on the
    PayExt
    screen.
    • The 30th day of the 9th month on Form 7004 for 1041 trust and estate returns that aren't bankruptcy estate returns.
    • The 15th day of the 10th month on Form 7004 for Form 1041-QFT, Form 1041 bankruptcy estates, and Form 3520-A returns.
    • The 15th day of the 10th month on Form 8868 for Form 1041-A and Form 5227 returns.
    • The 15th day of the 10th month on Form 4868 for Form 1040NR returns.
  4. Select
    File
    then
    Print Extensions
    .
  5. By default, UltraTax CS prints the 1st extension of both the federal and state returns. To print only the federal extension, select
    Options
and make sure that only the
    Federal
    checkbox is marked.
    note
If the security configuration allows for user-defined print options, you can set various print options for all extensions printed from this workstation.
  6. To print extensions for clients other than, or in addition to, the current client, select
    Clients
and select the clients extensions should print for.
  7. Select
    Print
    .
    note
When preparing the extended return, if the extension was printed without any tax amount or balance due, you'll need to enter the amount of any preliminary tax paid in the
    Paid with extension
    field on the
    PayExt
screen. If UltraTax CS calculated the amount due, that amount automatically shows in the
    Paid with extension
    field on the
    PayExt
screen unless you've entered a different amount in that field.
