Sign 1065 partnership returns for electronic filing

You can sign a 1065 electronic return by using either the Practitioner Personal Identification Number (PIN) or Scanned Form 8453 option.
note
  • Electronic signatures are required to file Form 8804 extensions electronically when using electronic funds withdrawal (EFW) to pay a balance due on the extension.
  • When you complete the following steps, UltraTax CS generates Form 8878-A, which the taxpayer needs to sign and return to the Electronic Return Originator (ERO) before transmitting the extension electronic file. The ERO keeps this form, unless the IRS asks for it.

Practitioner PIN option

  1. Complete the
    Name of partner signing return
    field in the Contact screen in the General folder. This field defaults to the name of the partnership representative, if available.
  2. Complete the
    Signature date of partner signing return
    field in the ELF screen. This should be the date that Form 8879-PE is signed by the partner or limited liability company member. UltraTax CS uses the current date if you leave this field blank and

    is selected in
    Setup
    ,
    Office Configuration
    , then the
    Print Options
    tab.
  3. Enter 5 numbers in the
    ERO PIN
    field. You can use any 5 digits other than 00000. The actual Electronic Return Originator (ERO) PIN is an 11-digit number, of which the 1st 6 digits are your IRS-assigned Electronic Filing Identification Number (EFIN) and the last 5 digits consist of the self-selected numbers entered in the ELF screen.
  4. Have the client complete the
    Taxpayer PIN
    field, which is a self-selected set of 5 numbers other than 00000.
note
As the electronic return originator (ERO), you can enter this PIN if you have the taxpayer's written signature on Form 8879-PE, IRS e-file Signature Authorization, which will print with the return if you elect to use the PIN. Keep this form with your records. Don't mail it to the IRS unless asked to do so.

Scanned Form 8453 option

  1. Once the return is completed, print a copy of Form 8453-PE, U.S. Partnership Declaration for an IRS e-file Return. You'll need to sign the form as the ERO, and a partner or limited liability company member will also need to sign the form.
  2. Scan the signed document into FileCabinet CS or another location.
    note
    The document needs to be in PDF format.
  3. To include the PDF in the electronic file, open the return and select
    Edit
    ,
    Electronic Filing Attachments
    , then
    Add
    .
  4. Select
    Federal
    from the dropdown in the
    Product
    field.
  5. Select
    Tax Return
    from the dropdown in the
    Return
    field.
  6. Select
    8453 Signature Document
    from the dropdown in the
    Attachment title
    field.
  7. If the document was scanned into FileCabinet CS, select
    FileCabinet CS
    , then
    Select
    to select the document. If the document wasn't scanned into FileCabinet CS, select
    File
    , then
    Browse
    to go to the location of the document you want to attach.
    note
    If you're running UltraTax CS through Virtual Office CS or Software as a Service (SaaS), you can go to files on your local network.
  8. Select
    OK
    to return to the
    Electronic Filing Attachments
    window.
  9. Select
    View Attachment
    to view the PDF file that UltraTax CS will include in the electronic file, or select
    OK
    to close the window.
  10. Complete the
    Name of partner signing return
    field in the Contact screen in the General folder. This field defaults to the name of the partnership representative, if available.
  11. Complete the
    Signature date of partner signing return
    field in the ELF screen in the Electronic Filing folder with the date the taxpayer signed Form 8453-PE. UltraTax CS uses the current date if you leave this field blank and
    When Form 8879 (etc.) signature date(s) (Preparer and/or Client) are not entered: use current date
    is selected in
    Setup

    tab.
    note
    Leave the PIN fields in the Electronic Filing Personal Identification (PIN) Information section of the ELF screen blank.
