Sign 990 returns for electronic filing

You can use either the Practitioner Personal Identification Number (PIN) or Scanned Form 8453 option to sign an electronic return.

Practitioner PIN

  1. Complete the
    Signature date
field on the ELF screen. This should be the date when an officer signs Form 8879-EO.
  2. Enter 5 numbers in the
    ERO PIN
field. You can select any 5 digits other than 00000. The actual Electronic Return Originator (ERO) PIN is an 11-digit number: the 1st 6 digits are your IRS-supplied Electronic Filing Identification Number (EFIN), and the last 5 digits are the self-selected numbers entered in the ELF screen.
  3. Have the client complete the
    Taxpayer PIN
field, a self-selected set of 5 numbers other than 00000.

Scanned Form 8453

  1. Complete the
    Signature date
    field on the ELF screen.
  2. Once you complete the return, print a copy of Form 8453-EO, Exempt Organization Declaration and Signature for Electronic Filing. You'll need to sign the form as the ERO, and have an officer also sign the form.
  3. Do 1 of the following:
    • If you're licensed for FileCabinet CS, scan the signed form into FileCabinet CS to create and store a PDF version of the form.
    • If you don't have FileCabinet CS, create a PDF file of the signed form and save the file to a location on your hard drive.
