Payment by credit card for balance due on returns, estimates, and extensions

Taxes due on returns, estimates, and extension can be paid using a credit card. However, the IRS doesn't allow the credit card information to be submitted with the returns, estimate vouchers, or extensions. Credit card payments need to be made using one of the IRS-approved payment systems.

Credit card payment systems

According to the IRS, a taxpayer can use their American Express, Discover, MasterCard, or Visa Card to make tax payments for returns, estimated tax payments, and extensions. A convenience fee will be charged by the service provided based on the amount paid.
note
The taxpayer will be told what the fee is during the transaction and will have the option to either continue or cancel the transaction.
Payments and questions about the provider's fees can be found by calling their toll-free automated customer service number or visiting the following websites.

Client instructions

When using any of the IRS-approved payment systems, you'll need to give information to your clients about making the payments.
Filing Instructions
You can include information on credit card payments in the client's printed filing instructions. There are 3 custom paragraphs regarding credit card payment information. Each of the custom paragraphs can be added by selecting the paragraph from the
Custom paragraph
dropdown on the
Letter
screen in the
General
folder.
  • For returns, select the
    Credit Card Payment (FI)
    custom paragraph.
  • For estimates, select the
    Estimates Credit Card Payment (FI)
    custom paragraph.
  • For extensions, select the
    Extension Credit Card Payment (FI)
    custom paragraph.
note
If you use the combined filing instructions for federal and state returns, don't select the
Estimates Credit Card Payment (FI)
custom paragraph. Select the
Credit Card Payment (FI)
custom paragraph.
Form 9325
If your client's return is being electronically filed, Form 9325, Acknowledgment, and General Information for Taxpayers Who File Returns Electronically, gives information about credit card payments for any balances due.
This form can be printed for electronically filed returns from the
E-File Status Print
window.
