Error: Workpapers CS doesn’t load in Microsoft Office applications

Scenario

When you open a Microsoft Excel workpaper, the application loads the Workpapers CS Add-In. This Add-In is needed to link the workpaper to the
Trial Balance
screen. You may get 1 of the following errors when you open an Excel workpaper.
  • #VALUE
    or
    #NAME
    in cells.
  • Workpapers CS menu doesn’t appear on the toolbar or ribbon bar in Microsoft Excel.
  • Documents don’t automatically return to the binder. This means that the status of the workpaper remains
    Checked Out
    when you close the document.

Solution 1: If documents aren't returned to the binder

  1. Right-click the workpaper, then select 1 of the following:
    • Discard checkout
      if the document doesn’t include your recent changes.
    • Return to binder
      , if the document includes your recent changes.
  2. If you get an error message:
    1. Check if there is a copy of the workpaper at
      C:\Users\[your user name]\AppData\Local\Creative Solutions\Accounting CS\CheckedOutFiles
    2. If there's a copy, make sure that the document's permissions aren't
      Read-only
      .

Solution 2: Check your version of Office

  1. You'll need to run Office 32-bit. Refer to our Microsoft Guidelines for CS Professional Suite to check that we support the version of Microsoft Office you're running.
  2. Check that you have only one version of Microsoft Office installed.
  3. If you need to uninstall a version of Microsoft Office, refer to the Microsoft Support website to make sure you fully remove the installation.

Solution 3: Check you aren't running the application as an administrator

  1. Close the application.
  2. Right-click the application's icon on your Windows Desktop, then select
    Properties
    from the context menu.
  3. On the
    Compatibility
    tab, verify that the
    Run this program as an administrator
    checkbox is clear.
  4. Check that the executable application file is not run as administrator:
    1. Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Creative Solutions\
      Workpapers CS
      or C:\Program Files\Creative Solutions\
      Workpapers CS
      .
    2. Right-click on
      WorkpapersCS.exe
      , then select
      Properties
      from the context menu.
    3. On the
      Compatibility
      tab, make sure the
      Run this program as an administrator
      checkbox is clear.

Solution 4: Check the Add-In is enabled

  1. In Microsoft Excel, select the
    File
    tab, then
    Options
    .
  2. Select
    Add-Ins
    .
  3. Select
    Excel Add-Ins
    from the
    Manage
    dropdown, then select
    Go
    .
  4. Make sure the Verify that the
    Cs.Accounting.Excel.Automation item
    checkbox is marked.
  5. Select
    OK
    .
  6. Repeat steps 1 and 2.
  7. Select
    COM Add-Ins
    from the
    Manage
    dropdown, then select
    Go
    .
  8. Make sure the
    CS.Accounting.OfficeIntegration.ExcelVstoAddin
    item checkbox is marked.
  9. Select
    OK
    .
  10. If the
    CS.Accounting.Excel.Automation
    and
    CS.Accounting.OfficeIntegration.ExcelVstoAddin
    items are not present:
    1. Select
      Disabled Items
      from the
      Manage
      dropdown list.
    2. Select the item, then
      Enable
      .

Solution 5: Review your Trusted Locations for Excel

  1. In Microsoft Excel or Word, select the
    File
    tab, then
    Options
    .
  2. Select
    Trust Center
    .
  3. Select
    Trust Center Settings
    .
  4. Select
    Trusted Locations
    .
  5. Select
    Add new location
    .
  6. Select
    Browse
    , go to C:\Program Files(x86)\Creative Solutions\
    Workpapers CS
    , then select
    OK
    .
  7. Mark the
    Subfolders of this location are also trusted
    checkbox.
  8. Select
    OK
    .

Solution 6: Turn off any Add-Ins not in use

  1. In Microsoft Word or Excel, select
    File
    , then
    Options
    .
  2. Select
    Add-Ins
    .
  3. Select
    COM Add-ins
    from the
    Manage
    dropdown list.
  4. Select
    Go
    .
  5. Clear the checkbox for any Add-Ins that you're not using.
  6. Select
    OK
    .

Solution 7: Reinstall the application

  1. On the workstation, go to
    Control Panel
    .
  2. Select
    Programs and Features
    .
  3. Select
    Workpapers CS
    , then
    Uninstall
    .
  4. Go to the WinCSI folder where you installed the application.
  5. Open the
    Workpapers CS
    folder inside the WinCSI folder.
  6. Inside the DESKTOP folder, double-click Setup.exe.

Solution 8: Reset user interface

If you're using Virtual Office, try resetting your user interface settings.
  1. Select
    Help
    then
    Reset User Interface Settings
    to delete your Client Settings file and reset the settings.
  2. Close and reopen the application.
