About Organizational Units

Every time a matter is created, an organizational unit must be associated with the matter. This association between the organizational unit and each matter drives several important features of Tracker:
  • Because an organizational unit is selected for each matter, users can retrieve a list of matters assigned to a particular organizational unit. Similarly, reports can be run for just a particular organizational unit, or a report could be generated comparing totals across all organizational units
  • A regular company user has access to a matter only if the user has been invited to be a matter participant for the matter (Co. Sys. Admin users have access to all matters by virtue of being a system administrator). However, you can grant access to all matters in a particular organizational unit, or grant access to reports for a particular organizational unit.
You can create up to five tiers below the top-level organizational unit (called All Organizational Units). Each organizational unit can have up to 72 subunits below the organizational unit. In other words, you can create 72 subunits below the top-level organizational unit, and then each of those organizational units can have 72 subunits below them.
For many companies, the organizational unit will be the same as the cost center structure, although there is no direct linkage in Tracker between organizational units and the cost center information that is provided for each matter.
