Delegates overview

A delegate is a user you choose to have access to all the matters you are a direct participant of, unless the matter is a limited-access matter.  Your legal assistant is an example of someone you'd like to have access to your matters.

Delegate's permissions

  • Your delegate gets the same role you have. However, if the delegate is already a matter participant and has a higher role, they retain the higher role.
  • You'll need to give the delegate matter access rights if you want them to be able to work in the matter.
  • If your delegate has a delegate of their own, their delegate won’t have access to your matter.
Here are 2 examples of how delegates work:
Example 1:
You have access to 2 matters: John Walker v. Acme and ABC Computer Lease. You are a matter administrator for John Walker v. Acme and a matter reader for ABC Computer Lease. You specify Chris Smith to be one of your delegates. If Chris is not already a matter participant in the John Walker v. Acme and ABC Computer Lease matters, Chris will be added as a delegate participant to these matters. Chris will be a matter administrator for John Walker v. Acme and matter reader for ABC Computer Lease.
Example 2:
The same scenario as Example 1, except that Chris was already a matter participant in the ABC Computer Lease matter as a matter editor when you selected Chris as a delegate. Even though you are only a matter reader in the matter, Chris will retain the role of matter editor in the ABC Computer Lease matter.
