E-file for large partnership returns with direct k-1 import

Step 1 - federal and state

  1. Create a new locator or binder depending on your product (main return). Don’t include partner information in this return.
  2. Enter all the partnership information for both the federal and any states that will be electronically filed via XML. In this main return, after you enter all the partnership information, create an e-file for federal.
  3. Clear e-file diagnostics related to partnership forms before continuing to Step 2. Ignore the e-file diagnostics pertaining to partner information.

Step 2 - federal

  1. Make a copy of Step 1’s main return. This copy will serve as your federal main return, which you'll use from Step 3 onward to submit the qualified federal return.
  2. Depending on the rules in the following Partner allocations chart and the total number of partners, create additional copies of the federal main return as needed. Remember, don't repeat any partner on these copies. We suggest you complete each copy of the federal main return through the end of Step 2 before making the next one.
  3. Consider partner limits:
    • If your return includes extensive Schedule K-3 data, limit each copy of the federal master to 3,000 partners.
    • If you're using
      Partner Allocations Enabled
in Organizer and don't have extensive Schedule K-3 data, keep it to no more than 5,000 partners per return.
    • If there's no extensive Schedule K-3 data and you're using Direct K-1 import (Partner Allocations Disabled), aim for no more than 10,000 partners in each return.
    Condition
    Extensive K-3 data
    Limited or no K-3 data

    maximum 5,000 partners

  4. Create an XML file. The XML file contains both K-1s and K-3s.
  5. Clear e-file diagnostics to qualify the returns.
  6. Repeat Step 2 until you include all partners.

Step 3 - federal

Download the qualified federal XML files from all the copies of the federal main return.

States

Once you've submitted the federal XML and it's accepted by the IRS, we suggest moving on to the states. Since the states don’t include Federal Schedule K-3 data, the client can import 10,000 partners to each return copied for states.

Step 6 - states

  1. Make a copy of Step 1’s main return that will be used starting in Step 8 to submit the qualified state returns (state master).
  2. Copy the state main return as needed. Each copy of the state master should be limited to 10,000 partners.
  3. Create the states XML files.
  4. Clear e-file diagnostics to qualify the state returns.
  5. Repeat Step 6 until all partners are included.
