About Tax Return Import Export

This feature is a productivity tool for importing and exporting tax return data.

About Tax Return Import Export

This a supplemental product. It avoids the need for data entry and allows the import of tax information through text or JSON files. It also exports tax information from a
locator
to text or JSON files.
Tax Return Import Export is for all tax types: 1040, 1041, 1065, 1120, 990, 5500, 706, and 709.
The tax information can be in 3 places:
  • Organizer screens for client data input.
  • Tax forms with finalized tax information.
  • Workpaper (or yellow paper) screens that perform certain calculations between the organizer and tax form.
You can export data from all 3 places but you can only import data to organizer screens.
Thomson Reuters enables most fields for Tax Return Import Export. For each tax type, a list of these enabled fields and information about them are entered into an Excel workbook called a
file set
.
You'll need to close the
locator
and check its data back into storage before import or export, otherwise you'll get an error.

Tax Return Import

Most organizer fields are available for import, but not: protected organizer fields, certain computed organizer fields, tax form fields, and workpaper fields.
After import, fields display in a
locator
with blue text. You can import data into fields normally computed or carried from another source. This results in an override on that field, shown by a red circle.

Tax Return Export

Tax Return Export exports the
locator
data from all fields in the file set — organizer, tax form, and workpaper. Fields on screens that don't contain active data will not export. For example, the partnership name carries to the top of nearly every tax form regardless of whether that tax form is being filed. Those tax forms may otherwise not contain active data and they won't export.
