IND-406 e-file error

If the filing status of the return is married filing separately or head of household, then the Spouse must have no income (or loss).
You'll get this error if you've coded an item of income in the input screen to the spouse. You can't do this on married filing separate (MFS) or head of household (HOH) returns.

Solution

Follow these steps to find the income coded to the spouse and either delete it or change the code to
Taxpayer
:
  • In the Income folder:
    1. On the W2, Broker, 1099M, 1099C, W2G, and 2439 screens, find any units coded
      S
      or
      Spouse
and either delete them or change the code to
      T
      or
      Taxpayer
      .
    2. On the B&D, Income, Refunds, 6781, 965, and 8992 screens, find any statement boxes with income coded
      S
      or
      Spouse
and either delete them or change the code to
      T
      or
      Taxpayer
      .
  • In the Retirement, Rent & Royalty, Farm, Farm Rental, K1 1065 1120s, and K1 1041 folders:
    • Find any units coded
      S
      or
      Spouse
and either delete them or change the code to
      T
      or
      Taxpayer
      .
If you want to include the spouse income on the return, you'll need to change the filing status:
  1. Go to the General folder.
  2. Select
    2
    for
    MFJ
    in the
    Filing Status
    field.
