IND-517-01 e-file error

A Dependent SSN in the return must not be the same as the Primary or Spouse SSN on another return where 'PrimaryClaimAsDependentInd' or 'SpouseClaimAsDependentInd' is not checked. (value XXXXXXXXX, rule IND-517-01)
note
The value represents the Social Security number of the dependent causing the rejection.
You'll get this error if the dependent Social Security number entered in the return was entered on another return this year. This can happen because of incorrect data entry or because the dependent filed their own tax return.

Solution

  1. If there's more than 1 dependent on the return, note the value at the end of the rejection. It will help you find the dependent causing the error.
  2. Go to the General folder.
  3. Select the 1040 screen.
  4. Open the
    Dependent Information
    statement.
  5. Check the
    SSN
field for the value mentioned in the rejection. Once you find it, check for typos or incorrect information for the dependent.
  6. Correct any wrong information. Then recreate and retransmit the return.
  7. If the data is correct, check your client to find out if the dependent filed their own tax return.
    • If they did file their own return, you can either remove the dependent from the return and resubmit it, or you can file the parents' return and amend the dependent's return.
    • If they didn't file their own return, contact the IRS e-file help desk at 866.255.0654, or have the taxpayer contact IRS Accounts Management at 800.829.0922 for help.
