Entering prior year PIN and AGI for first-time filers

To file Form 1040 electronically for first-time filers, use either the Self-Select PIN method or the Practitioner PIN method.

Self-Select PIN method

Taxpayers over the age of 16 can enter zero for the prior year AGI to file Form 1040 electronically. Taxpayers under age 16 can't use the Self-Select PIN method and need to use the Practitioner PIN method to file Form 1040 electronically. Refer to the Validating Your Electronically Filed Tax Return page of the IRS website.

Practitioner PIN method

To turn on the Practitioner PIN method:
  1. Go to
    Setup
    , then
    Office Configuration
    .
  2. On the
    E-Filing
    tab, select
    ERO
    .
  3. Mark the
    Practitioner PIN Program filer
    checkbox.
note
When you mark this checkbox, you can leave the prior year AGI and prior year PIN blank on the PIN screen PIN and electronically file Form 1040. This can also work for taxpayers who don't have their prior year PIN and prior year AGI information.
