Withholding from Forms 592-B and 593

All withholding reported on CA Form 540 or Form 540NR is from the federal input screens. By default, any California withholding is reported on Form 540, line 71, or Form 540NR, line 81. Therefore, you need to classify any withholding reported via Form 592-B or 593 in the application. To classify the withholdings, take the following steps based on the type of form and entity.
  • Withholdings from Form 593
     — To report withholdings from Form 593 that aren't from a pass-through entity on Form 540 or 540NR:
    • Go to the federal
      A
       screen, in the
      Itemized
       folder.
    • Enter a
      Code 3 - Real estate withholding
       in the
      State and local income tax
       section.
  • Withholdings from Form 592-B
     — To report withholdings from Form 592-B that aren't from a pass-through entity on Form 540 or 540NR:
    1. Go to the federal
      StPmt
       screen, in the
      Payments
       folder.
    2. Enter the withholdings from Form 592-B as state withholdings in
      Other withholding
      .
    3. Go to the
      CA592-B
       screen, in the
      Payments
       folder, and within the
      CA
       input screens, use
      Total California tax withheld
       to report the same amount on Form 540, line 73, or Form 540NR, line 83.

Electronically filed returns

Any amount reported as
Real Estate and Other withholding
 (Form 593 and Form 592-B withholding) on California Form 540 or Form 540NR needs to be reconciled for electronic filing purposes.
  • Form 593 -
     For e-filed returns, you need to complete the
    593
     screens, in the
    Payments
     folder in the CA input screens. This is a multi-unit screen. The total
    Amount withheld from this seller
     needs to equal the amount on line 73 of Form 540, or line 83 of Form 540NR.
  • Form 592-B -
     For e-filed returns, you need to complete the
    592B
     screen, in the
    Payments
     folder in the CA input screens. Enter
    Total California tax withheld
     and
    Total backup withholding
    , as needed. The sum of these 2 needs to equal the total amount on line 73 of Form 540, or line 83 of Form 540NR.
