Screen CASTCr - California Credit for Taxes Paid to Other States (1040)
Overview
Use this screen to complete Schedule S, Other State Tax Credit.
Other State Information
Enter information about taxes paid to other states in this section. If processing a multiple-state return, UltraTax/1040-CA calculates the credit on California resident returns and on nonresident California returns filing with Arizona, Oregon, or Virginia resident returns. The order in which resident / nonresident returns are processed depends on the states attached to the return.
If processing a multiple-state return that includes a state other than Arizona, Oregon, or Virginia, follow the standard UltraTax/1040 procedure by processing the nonresident state(s) first followed by the resident state. UltraTax/1040-CA transfers information from the nonresident return(s) to the California resident return to complete Schedule S.
If processing a multiple-state return that includes an Arizona, Oregon, or Virginia resident return, process the reciprocal resident state first, followed by the reciprocal nonresident state. When California is the nonresident state, UltraTax/1040-CA receives the information transferred from the reciprocal nonresident state and completes Schedule S. For example, if a taxpayer is an Oregon resident required to file a California nonresident return, process the Oregon resident return first, and then process the nonresident California return. UltraTax/1040-CA calculates the credit for tax paid another state on California Schedule S. In addition, when California is the resident state, UltraTax/1040-CA provides the reciprocal nonresident states with the data necessary for them to process the credit for tax paid, when the credit is applicable on those returns.
If processing a Texas LLC return, UltraTax/1040-CA does not receive information from, or transfer information to the Texas return. All data entry from the other state return must be entered manually. In addition, if credit is claimed on Schedule S for taxes paid to Texas, return must be paper-filed.
If processing a Domestic Partner return, UltraTax/1040-CA does not receive information from, or transfer information to other state returns. All data from the other state returns must be entered manually.
If processing a part-year California resident return, UltraTax/1040-CA does not calculate or transfer information from other returns. Use the force fields on this screen to calculate the credit.
UltraTax/1040-CA automatically prints copies of state returns for nonresident states for which the credit for taxes paid to other states has been calculated. Per state instruction, electronically filed returns do not contain other state returns. The state may request a copy at a later date.
